Chapter 21

In the morning I felt like I haven’t slept in days. My head was hurting, and my whole body was sore. The only bonus of waking up was me being tangled with Katana. It was almost too hot for me in there because of her fur. But I could say that I haven’t slept like that in days.

When I remembered what day it was I jumped out of bed, and even with the aches, it was one of the best days since my dad died. Even though I was sad knowing he would never see Katana, It was my first day with my animal, and a Tiger for that matter. I wanted to show her around so bad! I took a quick shower and got dressed with the usual uniform. This was the first time that I woke the girls and not the other way around. I almost got hit in the face when it was Gwen’s turn to be awaken, but it missed, so I guess today was a good day.

“Come on you guys! You need to go down stairs with me so we can make that clické moment walking down the hall in slow motion with air blowing at our faces and everyone stares at us being fabulous!” they were both waking slowly. Hell was curled with Gwen in bed and Rin was nowhere to be found.

“Okay Kayla, just shut up for a second before I hit you again. And this time I won’t miss. I really didn’t sleep at all last night.”  Gwen’s voice was muffled by the pillow over her head. Mia walked toward me. “Just don’t talk to her right now. She needs at least five minutes to wake up completely.” Katana was stretching over my bed. Her head was down and tail was held high.

I waited for them to get ready. I was trying to play with Katana with a string I found on my stuff, and she just looked at me like I was being stupid or something like that. Okay, so she didn’t behave like a docile cat. Who knew? In fifteen minutes they were ready to go. I knew for a fact they would all be looking at me. Who wouldn’t right? I was a huge fighter. I had the reflexes of a snake. My hair was amazing today, and I had a freaking tiger walking beside me. Nothing could go wrong. ‘That’s a way of thinking that you never had before.’ Katana said confused. I ignored her. I was feeling amazing today. It was like I had discovered a new self confidence I didn’t have before. Nothing could ruin me day.

As we neared the cafeteria the expected happened. Everyone stopped talking at once and started gnawing. I help my head up high and started toward the food, breakfast. Katana never leaving my side. I served myself and went to sit beside Chris and Derek. They were both looking at Katana baffled, and I swear that Chris was drooling. I sat beside Derek, across from Chris.  

“Okay, that is way more awesome then I though. I swear I knew you were some kind of feline, but I was thinking more like a cat, or maybe a wildcat even, BUT A TIGER? Can I gloat to everyone about it now? Please?” Chris seemed like he was happier about my animal then me. Nah.

“Sure. If you want I won’t stop you.” I smiled. Gwen and Mia walked toward us and both sat. Mia at the other side of Derek, and Gwen beside Chris. I could see his focus change slightly to her. I swear she was the only one who didn’t know Chris had a big crush on her. Well, I wasn’t going to be the one to tell her.

“So, Kayla. How are you feeling with the whole transition thing? How was it for you?” Derek, inclined toward the table while eating a piece of bacon.

“Oh you know, Woods, a hell of a lot of animals attacking me and themselves. Some fallen birds. That kind of stuff.” I told him dismissively.  They all looked at me baffled.

“Hum, I don’t know about you guys, but I didn’t see any animal. I was in the trees yes, but the test was like a Maze or something. There were tests but nothing too noticeable.” Derek replied.

“Yeah, me too. Very creepy by the way. I really thought I would died.”  Chris looked confused as well. Both Mia and Gwen nodded and looked at me. They were having the same thoughts I was. I noticed then James sitting two tables down the cafeteria across from me, watching me incessantly. He had heard us talking, I was sure of it.

Katana started moving restless beside me, with J.K. on her sign. The panther walked away from its master and toward us. He was slightly bigger then Katana. I think he is mostly the same size as Griff, what is confusing, considering that naturally tigers are bigger than lions, and both bigger than a panther. I guess spiritual animals don’t always follow the rules. I should have known. My animal is a black tiger.

He started smelling Katana, and she returned the favor. I didn’t like that. Why of all animals she would enjoy J.K.’s company? Everyone was watching the exchange of both felines. I guess they recognized their familiarity. I didn’t see James walking to our table until he was already here. I guess I couldn’t have a normal breakfast.

“I shouldn’t be surprised. I knew you would be something amazing.” He said while looking at Katana. I was actually surprised by his honesty. I answered him equally.

“Thank you. I knew too. But she was better than I expected.” Katana resumed her place beside me again.

“Kayla. I just wanted to apologize to you for the way I treated you and your friends the other day. I was out of line and I am sorry.” Now I really lost my footing. What was that? It looked like he meant that. “Hum, thanks. It’s all right if you promise to not do it again.” He took a deep breath and nodded.

“All right. I promise.” Then he walked away. J.K. went with him. We all looked at each other when he left. “What the hell is happening? Does God want me to die from a heart attack? I guess the world is coming to an end. Did James just willingly apologizes?” Chris looked even more surprised by that then by Katana.

“Oh, come on. I know the guy is a douche but he is still human”.  I filled my mouth with a piece of pancake. Uh I freaking love this. I sneaked a piece for Katana. Then I remembered that then don’t eat. That was a big perk. Can you imagine the smell of a rhino’s shit?

“Huh, Kayla you really don’t know him. He NEVER allowed anyone to give him orders. Not even your mother. Mace once tried to put him in line and he got his ass kicked.” Mia said every word as if someone might hear us and tell us out.

“Are you kitting me? He is stronger than Mace? I thought Mace was the strongest. That is why they chose him for a teacher.” I was baffled. How strong can James really be? Mace was almost a machine. No one could beat him.

“No. They chose him because he was very strong and had discipline. James is the most skilled. He is both strong and fast. In matter of skill, James comes first, then Mace and Rock, the bear dude.” Chris corrected me. Derek nodded.

“Yep, then comes you and me. Mia is very strong but she lacks in other areas. She is in fifteenth place.” Derek affirmed.

“Oh well. Now that I have Katana, let see if I get at least in second place shall we? Let’s go Kat. Your first day of class awaits you.” I got up, and left the cafeteria with Katana.
